Activated Carbon Filtration System for COD Removal

AMCON's Activated Carbon Filtration System for COD Removal removes COD (chemical oxygen demand) components in industrial wastewater and treated sewage effluent through the adsorption action of activated carbon. Installed downstream of biological treatment, chemical precipitation, or other treatment processes, it helps meet effluent quality standards and supports wastewater recycling.

Main Applications

  • COD removal and advanced treatment for industrial wastewater
  • Polishing treatment after biological treatment or chemical precipitation
  • Tertiary treatment (advanced treatment) at sewage treatment plants
  • Wastewater recycling and reuse treatment
  • Treatment to meet effluent quality standards

Main Industries and Facilities

The Activated Carbon Filtration System for COD Removal can be used across a wide range of industries and facilities that need to address organic matter in wastewater.

  • Chemicals, materials, and machinery
  • Food manufacturing
  • Dyeing and textiles
  • Paper manufacturing
  • Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics
  • Sewage treatment facilities

Key Benefits

Improving effluent quality by removing refractory organic matter

Under regulations such as Japan’s Water Pollution Prevention Act, effluent standards are established for COD levels in wastewater. Activated carbon adsorption efficiently removes refractory organic matter and color components that cannot be removed by biological treatment or chemical precipitation alone. Even for wastewater with high organic matter concentrations, such as wastewater from chemical plants, dyeing plants, and paper mills, the system helps achieve stable effluent quality that meets the required standards.

Expected Benefits
  • Compliance with laws and regulations
  • Consideration for local communities and the environment

Wastewater Recycling and Reuse

By removing COD and organic matter to a high degree, treated water can be more easily reused as process water, cooling water, or similar applications. This helps make effective use of water resources and reduce industrial water costs.

Expected Benefits
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Reduced water consumption

Upgrading Existing Wastewater Treatment Systems

Added as tertiary treatment (advanced treatment) downstream of biological treatment and chemical precipitation systems, the system can remove refractory organic matter and color components. Compared with building new equipment, it helps improve effluent quality at a lower cost.

Expected Benefits
  • Effective use of existing equipment
  • Reduced equipment renewal costs

Advantages

Maintains Stable Filtration Performance Over the Long Term

The system uses a specially designed water distribution and collection strainer inside the vessel. Uniform flow through the activated carbon layer provides stable adsorption performance, while backwashing reliably removes impurities accumulated in the activated carbon layer. Because the load on the activated carbon is also reduced, the design helps minimize activated carbon breakage, deterioration, and clogging for long service life. The system body uses highly durable stainless steel and supports a variety of raw water conditions.

Activated Carbon Selection Based on Application

Activated carbon is available in various types depending on the raw material and form, including coconut shell-based and coal-based activated carbon, as well as crushed and pelletized grades. Based on water quality analysis of the customer’s wastewater, AMCON selects activated carbon suited to the wastewater characteristics, target substances, and treatment goals to support efficient water quality improvement.

Designed for Limited Installation Space

The efficient design makes the system easy to install even at sites with limited installation space. Specifications can also be adjusted to match constraints related to the installation location and delivery route.

Activated Carbon Replacement for Existing Systems

AMCON also supports activated carbon replacement for systems currently in use. Depending on the customer’s request, we can provide integrated support from water quality analysis and activated carbon selection to replacement work and industrial waste disposal. If the system itself needs renewal, we can also provide Solutions for new equipment.

How Activated Carbon Filtration Works

COD components in wastewater, including organic matter, color components, and refractory substances, are removed by adsorption into the pores on the surface of activated carbon. AMCON’s Activated Carbon Filtration System for COD Removal efficiently removes these components by passing wastewater through a vessel filled with activated carbon.

Activated carbon is selected according to wastewater quality, target substances, and the required treated water quality. AMCON provides media suited to the application, including coconut-shell-based and coal-based activated carbon.

As water continues to pass through the system, suspended matter and other impurities accumulate in the activated carbon layer. These are removed through periodic backwashing. After manual or automatic backwashing, the system returns to filtration operation and continuously supplies consistent treated water.

Operating status can be monitored with instruments such as flow meters and pressure gauges, and automatic operation according to operating conditions is also supported. Systems can be selected from small to large models according to the customer’s treatment volume. Because activated carbon has a limited adsorption capacity, periodic replacement is required. AMCON also supports activated carbon replacement.

Related Products Supporting Wastewater Treatment

In addition to the Activated Carbon Filtration System for COD Removal, AMCON offers products that support Wastewater Treatment processes.

  • Sludge Dewatering Presses (VOLUTE DUO™ / VOLUTE™): Dewatering and volume reduction of sludge generated in Wastewater Treatment processes

AMCON can provide integrated support, from wastewater analysis and equipment Solutions to new system installation, removal and renewal work for existing systems, and After-Sales Support for media replacement.

Product Implementation Process

Please feel free to contact us first. We will confirm current wastewater issues, treatment volume, requirements, installation location, and other conditions, then provide specifications suited to the customer. In wastewater analysis, we check COD concentration, target substances, and required treated water quality, then determine the appropriate activated carbon and system specifications. After the specifications and auxiliary equipment are finalized, the system is manufactured, delivered, and installed, then handed over after commissioning.
