Activated Carbon Filter for Color Removal and Dechlorination
AMCON’s Activated Carbon Filter removes color components, residual chlorine, organic matter, and odor components from raw water through the adsorption and catalytic action of activated carbon. It helps protect membrane treatment systems and improve the quality of production water for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications. Built with durable stainless steel, it supports stable operation over the long term.
Main Applications
- Pretreatment for membrane treatment systems (RO, UF, NF)
- Pretreatment for boiler feedwater
- Production water for food, beverage, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics
- Industrial process water
- Aquaculture and aquarium water
Main Industries and Facilities
The Activated Carbon Filter is used across a wide range of industries and facilities that require color removal or dechlorination.
- Electronics
- Chemicals, materials, and machinery
- Pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and medical devices
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities
- Hotels and commercial facilities
- Food manufacturing
- Aquaculture farms and aquariums
Key Benefits
Protects Membrane Treatment Systems and Downstream Equipment
Membrane treatment systems such as RO, UF, and NF membranes are susceptible to degradation caused by residual chlorine. Removing residual chlorine upstream helps prevent membrane degradation and contributes to longer service life.
Expected Benefits
- Reduced membrane replacement costs
- Reduced maintenance frequency for downstream equipment
Addresses Quality Issues Caused by Color and Organic Matter
Color components and organic matter in raw water can affect product color, flavor, and quality. Adsorptive removal with activated carbon helps prevent impacts on product quality.
Expected Benefits
- Reduced impact on flavor and aroma
- Stable product quality
Controls Chlorine Odor and Musty Odor
The system removes chlorine odor caused by residual chlorine in tap water, as well as musty odor and trihalomethanes in raw water. It is used in beverage and food manufacturing, bathing facilities, aquaculture, and aquariums.
Expected Benefits
- Improved water taste and comfort
- Improved flavor of beverages and foods
Supports Aquatic Life Protection in Aquaculture and Aquariums
Residual chlorine in tap water is harmful to aquatic organisms such as fish and shellfish. Dechlorination upstream helps secure water quality that can be used safely for aquatic life.
Expected Benefits
- Stable growth environment for aquatic organisms
- Stable water quality management
Advantages
Long-term Stable Filtration Performance
Inside the unit, AMCON uses a specially designed collection and distribution strainer. Uniform flow through the activated carbon bed delivers stable adsorption performance and reliably removes impurities accumulated in the activated carbon bed during backwashing. The design also reduces stress on the activated carbon, helping minimize breakage, degradation, and clogging for long service life. The vessel is made of durable stainless steel and supports a range of raw water conditions.
Activated Carbon Selection Built Around Your Application
Activated carbon is available in various types depending on raw material and form, including coconut-shell-based and coal-based activated carbon, crushed carbon, and formed carbon. Based on water quality analysis, AMCON selects activated carbon suited to the customer’s raw water quality, target substances for removal, and application, supporting efficient water quality improvement.
Designed for Limited Installation Space
The efficient design makes the equipment easier to install at sites where space is limited. Specifications can also be adjusted to match installation locations and access-route constraints.
Activated Carbon Replacement for Existing Systems
AMCON also supports activated carbon replacement for equipment already in operation. Upon customer request, we can provide integrated support from water quality analysis and activated carbon selection to replacement work and industrial waste disposal. When equipment renewal is required, AMCON can also provide solutions for new equipment.
How the Activated Carbon Filter Works
The Activated Carbon Filter removes color components, organic matter, odor components, residual chlorine, trihalomethanes, and other substances from raw water through the adsorption and catalytic action of activated carbon. Color components, organic matter, and odor components are adsorbed into pores on the activated carbon surface, while residual chlorine is decomposed and removed by a catalytic reaction on the activated carbon surface. In AMCON’s Activated Carbon Filter, raw water passes through a vessel filled with activated carbon to efficiently remove these components.
Activated carbon is selected according to raw water quality, target substances for removal, and the required treated water quality. AMCON provides the appropriate media for the application, including coconut-shell-based and coal-based media.
As water continues to pass through the system, turbidity and other impurities accumulate in the activated carbon bed and are removed through periodic backwashing. After manual or automatic backwashing, the system returns to filtration operation and continues supplying consistent treated water.
Operating status can be monitored with instruments such as flowmeters and pressure gauges, and automatic operation can be supported according to operating conditions. Equipment can be selected from small to large models based on the customer’s treatment capacity. Activated carbon has a limited adsorption capacity and requires periodic replacement. AMCON also supports activated carbon replacement.

Integrated Industrial Water Treatment System Solutions
AMCON provides optimized system configurations according to raw water quality and application, not only Activated Carbon Filters.
- Sand Separator: Removes sand and fine solids from raw water (pretreatment)
- Rapid Sand Filter: Removes turbidity and fine particles
- Iron and Manganese Removal Filter: Removes iron and manganese from groundwater and industrial water
- Ion Exchange Water Softener: Removes hardness components
AMCON provides integrated support covering water quality analysis, equipment selection, filter media selection, new equipment installation, removal and replacement of existing equipment, and After-Sales Support including filter media replacement.
Please contact us to discuss your requirements. We review the current water quality issues, application, requirements, installation location, and other conditions, then provide specifications suited to the customer’s needs. During raw water quality analysis, we confirm the concentrations of color and residual chlorine as well as other target substances for removal, then determine the appropriate activated carbon and equipment specifications. After the specifications and auxiliary equipment are finalized, manufacturing, delivery, and installation are completed, followed by commissioning and handover.
